Hal Hunt Auctions has a tall walnut Renaissance Revival sideboard listed as attributed to Alexander Roux in its June 27 Estates Sale. The listing notes a marble top, a large carved wolf head in the crest, and a size of 100 inches high by 82 inches wide by 24 inches deep. The estimate is $3,000–$6,000. You can see it here.
The wolf-head crest is the detail that makes this one worth filing. A lot of Renaissance Revival sideboards lean on columns, panels, mirrors, and marble; an animal crest gives this example a little more personality and makes it easier to compare against other high-style New York work.
I would keep the attribution word attached to Roux until the piece can be examined closely, but the scale and carving are exactly the kind of evidence I want in the comparison folder. Even when the maker call stays qualified, an object like this helps train the eye for the difference between a competent Victorian sideboard and one with real cabinetmaker ambition.
