19th Century Mahogany Gothic Cheval Mirror

May 29, 2008

I don’t run across many Cheval mirrors that I would like to own save for a few nice Renaissance Revival and Merklen-style spiral-carved varieties, but this one with Gothic details caught my eye. This one is large – 7′ x 4′ and 2′ deep. The seller is characterizing it as Aesthetic Movement with [...]

Modern Day Merklen Maker

February 11, 2008

Tom Webster is a wood turner from Indianapolis, Indiana and he sent me these photos of a Merklen-inspired table that he created from Curly Oak. November 11, 2007

This incredible Merklen chair, for which you can see an identical twin represented in the print copy of Paul Tucker’s article in “The Magazine Antiques”, sold today for $3,250. It was incorrectly marked as a Hunzinger with an expected range of $300 to $600, which was readily obliterated.
The chair includes the ubiquitous Merklen spiral [...]

George C. Flint Spiral Turned 1890s Rocker

October 26, 2007

Rockers aren’t exactly sexy so I don’t generally post about them but this one is important for historical reference. There are too few labeled Victorian pieces out there to give us an historic record of who made what. The word “attributed” accompanies 90% of pieces being sold that have a cabinet maker’s name [...]
