Bill M. sent me photos of a five-piece inlaid Renaissance Revival parlor suite with porcelain plaques to get some input on it’s maker.  He had run into this older post I did on the Herter Brothers attributions that come about from the mere presence of decorative inlay and overall high style.  Twenty years ago, Bill’s [...]

Associating Herter Brothers With Decorative Inlay

July 26, 2009

Peter sent me this photo of a Renaissance Revial parlor set that he has from a “wealthy relative” and was asking if I knew who the cabinetmaker may have been that constructed it.  He was wondering if it was made by Herter Brothers, probably due to the carved lion (or griffin) arms and especially the [...]

Gustave Herter Parlor Suite?

November 27, 2008

It’s fun to see antiques put up for sale with low sale range estimates and see them hit prices 10-times what the auction house anticipated.  Harlowe-Powell put a very conservative $2,500 top range price on this set which proceeded to garner $23,000 plus buyers premium of 20%.
They were on the right track with an attribution [...]
