Pottier & Stymus Egyptian Revival Two-Piece Parlor Set

Published by RareVictorian under Auction, Ebay Antiques

Fotaine’s has this two-piece Pottier & Stymus Egyptian Revival parlor set coming up for sale on October 18th. Of the P&S ER sets that were ever made, this is a more conservatively styled design without too much over-the-top Egyptian elements to either delight or shock visitors to your home.

As I mentioned in November of last year, I had always wanted an Egyptian Revival set and I recently had my opportunity in the form of a more elaborately designed 3-piece set by Pottier & Stymus.  The restoration is still pending…

The mounts on the set above are very similar to a set of P&S-signed mounts that I purchased along with my set, but which are extras.  These additional mounts were from another set from the same home from where my set originated but did not survive the furniture grim reaper.  I’m offering the extra (signed) mounts for sale in case someone collects them or would look to find a chair or sofa to restore.

Closeup of the mounts from the set at Fontaine’s:

A similar chair can be seen on page 56 of the book, Styles of American Furniture 1860-1960 in black-and-white so I cannot properly compare the mounts.  If Vegas had a line on whether “P.S.” is stamped on the back of those mounts, I’d be putting my money down.  I’m sure an email to Fontaine’s to have them remove them to check, would succeed.

I hope this set surpasses the $800-$1,200 estimate that Fontaine’s put on this sale.  More at the listing.

Thanks to Scott for the heads up on this set.

Allen and Brother Egyptian Revival Marble Top Table

Published by RareVictorian under Museum

Allen and Brother Table Philadelphia

This Egyptian Revival parlor table constructed by Allen and Brother is an impressive one.  A table like this is shown in the May 1996 issue of Magazine Antiques and I wouldn’t be surprised to know that the table’s owner at the time, Judith Hollander, had subsequently donated it to the Philadelphia Museum of Art where I photographed this.  I don’t know for sure.

Made of Walnut, burl Circassian walnut, ebonzing, gilt incising, and marble, it is a large table - 30 7/8 x 30 3/4 x 59 inches. The marble top on this table is breathtaking and I would have liked to step up on a ladder to photograph it but they don’t exactly have those standing by for museum goers to use.

I still lust over some of the Allen and Brother items we’ve seen come up for sale over the past year.

Pottier & Stymus Egyptian Revival Set

Published by RareVictorian under Research

Egyptian Revival Armchair Upholstery

Quick post to address some of the comments on the previous post:

I now have the Egyptian Revival set by Pottier & Stymus in my possession and I’ve done some digging to see if the upholstery is original and based on a tip from Woodwright to look for tack holes other than those of the current upholstery, it appears the set indeed has the original upholstery (no other tack holes).

I found the “PS” markings to denote Pottier & Stymus under the mount on the skirt of the chair.

I will be receiving two additional mounts shown below and one of the missing feet in the mail shortly. I assume the two heads are from the sofa that is now no longer with us in this world

Egyptian Revival Hardware

The red velour fabric is about 50% worn off of the set, there is significant fading or discoloration on much of the original tassels, and one of the chair backs is shattered and will need repairing so I am nearly set on reupholstering, while holding on to the original for posterity.

Much will need to be done to bring this set back to an acceptable state and it will take time, but I hope to bring you all along for the ride as the journey unfolds.
