Fontaine’s Exceptional Antique Auction Sept. 27th

Published by RareVictorian under Auction, Ebay Antiques

fontaines-meeks-hawkins Fontaines Exceptional Antique Auction Sept. 27th

Plenty of high-end Victorian coming up in the Fontaine sale in a few days with all the usual suspects: Belter, Roux, Meeks, Jelliff, Baudouine, Pottier & Stymus, and Horner among others.  The Meeks Hawkins pattern set above is expected to bring $35,000-$50,000 and a Belter Milwaukee 3-piece set, $20,000 to $30,000.  A surprisingly unassuming bedstead in the sale is signed A. Roux, which shows you that the best makers of the time absolutely made simplistic pieces for everyday use.

Book Review: Victorian Detail by Priscilla S. Meyer

Published by RareVictorian under Book Review, Research

I had previously mentioned that I’d be giving you a little more of a review on my latest book purchase, Victorian Detail, by Priscilla S. Meyer, so here goes.

Book by Priscilla S. Meyer, Victorian Detail

Lise Bohm tipped me off to this book, as she occasionally does, and this time I hit some research paydirt immediately upon receiving it. I had been trying to identify a particular chair that repeatedly shows up at auctions and was finally able to point to Charles Klein as the maker due to this book.

The full official name of the book is Victorian Detail: A Working Dictionary. The latter part of the title is the important part. For those of us who didn’t major in Decorative Arts in college or haven’t worked at an auction house for 25 years, it’s good to find a Victorian-specific “Dictionary” that educates the reader on the decorative elements of furniture - specifically Victorian furniture. Yes, there are other furniture anatomy books but they are so broad in scope that they aren’t helpful. Although I’m interested in it, I don’t currently desire to learn about the finishing touches of a Chippendale highboy.

I’m going to detail the Table of Contents because I believe that it gives you a complete picture of the value of the book:

Victorian Furniture at Cowan’s Auction This Weekend

Published by RareVictorian under Ebay Antiques

Meeks-Stanton-Hall-Armchairs-Pair-702760 Victorian Furniture at Cowans Auction This WeekendThere are a few items of Victorian furniture going up for sale during the Cowan’s auction this weekend, including this pair of Meeks Stanton Hall armchairs. There’s a second pair of Meeks side chairs that are also up for sale but have both suffered broken backs and subsequent repairs. Fortunately additional images showing the repairs have been added so that you may assess the damage. If you’re looking for Meeks-on-a-budget, this pair will be for you. There is also a John Henry Belter chair, two George Hunzinger chairs, and an attributed Charles Baudouine desk and chair also going to be sold. I’ve created this search to provide quick access to the full gamut of furniture selling at the Cowan’s sale.
