A Bevy of Belters

Published by RareVictorian under Ebay Antiques

A bunch of John Henry Belter’s simpler designs are coming up for auction from Flomaton and Thomaston. I’ve provided a quick pick list below. There are a few scroll pattern chairs and sofa, a pair of “Rosalie” chairs, and the chair on the top left I am not sure of the pattern. The keystone shape of the seat back is throwing me. It may be a variation on the “Henry Clay” pattern.

Alexander Roux Chairs with Interesting Provenance

Published by RareVictorian under Uncategorized

0954_1_lg-778276 Alexander Roux Chairs with Interesting ProvenanceHere’s a pair of chairs attributed to Alexander Roux with some exceptional carving and prominent crests. The most interesting aspect of the chairs is their provenance. I’ve included a bit of the text below, but I would recommend a visit to the listing for the full text and photographs of the home and handwritten letters.

“Homewood”, Natchez, Mississippi. Homewood was built by David Hunt, a wealthy planter and businessman in Adams County, Mississippi. He built this palatial home as a wedding gift to his daughter and named it “Homewood”. The house took five years to construct and was completed in 1860. The house burned to the ground in 1947. This lot is accompanied by two hand-written letters, c. 1865, discussing the fate of these chairs and other furniture, as well as, a framed image of “Homewood” before it burned
