Neal Auction’s next sale is coming up this weekend and it has it’s share of worthy lots which I have provided a sampling of below.  I have been so busy recently that I haven’t had a chance to review the paper catalog that is sent out but their website has all the details.  Attributed pieces by Alexander Roux, John H. Herter Brothers-Attributed Cabinet May Be Allen & Brother

allen brother herter cabinet Herter Brothers Attributed Cabinet May Be Allen & Brother

I bid on a cabinet this week after I learned of a “Herter Brothers” cabinet coming up at a local auction.  I immediately thought Allen & Brother when I saw the cabinet photos.  I coincidentally ran into the “Gems of the Centennial” which I then posted here on Rare Victorian and lo an behold there was an Allen & Brother cabinet in there that bore a good resemblance to the core form of the cabinet.

Herter Brothers Bookcase At Mark Vail Auction

Published by John Werry under Auction

herter bookcase Herter Brothers Bookcase At Mark Vail Auction

Mark Vail’s June 6 auction has a lot for sale that I will call “entry-level” Herter Brothers.  From what I see this is a 100% authentic Herter Brothers bookcase.  It’s not one of Herters’ high-style pieces as the design is more straightforward and utilitarian.  The three drawers are branded “Herter Bro’s” and I have compared the escutcheons with a favorable result to the reference images in the Herter book as you can see below.

There are condition issues and, again, were it not for the Herter branding you might never know it was by the famous brothers’ shop.  However, if you’re a Herter Brothers fan, here would be a chance to start off your collection at what I feel will be a relatively inexpensive price.  You may then choose to spruce it up with some restoration.

The June 12 event to be presented by Michaan’s Auctions of Alameda, CA, is sure to be a crowd pleaser. More than 260 lots of fine art, furniture and decorative art will cross the auction block this day.

One of the notable Victorian furniture items is a wonderful mid 19th century American Rocco Revival rosewood étagère cabinet attributed to J. & J. Meeks, New York (est. $35,000 – 40,000). The rectangular glazed and paneled case of this cabinet is surmounted by an arched pediment centering a carved acanthus leaf over a cartouche-shaped mirror plate, along with a conforming-shaped shelf, over an oval mirror plate enclosed by corner quadrant panels. The piece includes two graduated spandrel shelves raised on tapered pilaster form stiles on a shaped platform cabinet. The cabinet has a drawer over twin hexagonal shaped mirror plates with these being flanked by twin sets of two graduated spandrel shelves raised on pilaster feet headed by an apron frieze. This commanding cabinet stands an impressive 83in tall.

Herter Brothers Furniture In The Movies

Published by John Werry under Auction, Video Posts

herter brothers bed table Herter Brothers Furniture In The Movies

We received a tip from Joe in the comments on this post that we could find some of the Warner Brothers Herter Brothers furniture stash that recently sold at Bonhams in the film, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.”   I located the above screen capture from a clip from YouTube confirming his story.

In the photo you can see the shaving stand on the left (sold for $61,000), the bedstead (sold for $326,000), the table (sold for $48,000), and there may be a pair of night stands present ($23,180), though obscured in the shot above.  Judy and Max Foote who stop by the Rare Victorian site on occasion were the winning bidders on the bed, shaving stand and night stands, though I am not certain if they took home the table pictured as well.

If I’m not mistaken, that is a John Henry Belter chair in front as well.
