Neal Auction Louisiana Purchase Sale, November 20th & 21st
Neal Auction is preparing for their annual Louisiana Purchase sale this weekend which includes a full representation of styles from the early 19th Century through the early 20th.
One of the more interesting items is a Gothic Carved Rosewood Center Table, c. 1845, after a design by Alexander Jackson Davis with original hexagonal white marble top. One can spot a glimpse of the table design in Alexander Jackson Downing’s influential “Architecture of Country Houses” in figure 179. Once can also see an image of a related but less decorative table in “The Gothic Revival Style in America, 1830-1870“. Neal is expecting a range of $25,000-$30,000 for the table.
Another key item at the sale is a Rosewood Rococo Revival half-tester bed made by Prudent Mallard. I would say this is one of the more heavily carved beds I’ve seen attributed to Mallard and it is interesting to see the creeping-in of Renaissance Revival elements, especially the cartouches in the footboard. Neal Auction is expecting a $35,000-$50,000 final sale on this bed.
There is also a rare George Hunzinger daybed with its original patented woven wire webbing. Expected range for this item is $6,000-$8,000.
Here’s a small smattering of 19th Century lots that will be in this sale and more information is available at the Neal auction website.
