Allen & Brother Nightstand For Sale
Available for sale is this nightstand with original marble top and "A" key, attributed to the famous Philadelphia cabinetmaking shop of Allen & Brother. All four sides have decorative birdseye maple panels. These panels have an outer layer of maple and inner layer of a darker wood - walnut. As was a practice of Daniel Pabst, another Philadelphia cabinetmaker at the time, the designs in the maple panel are cut through to expose the darker layer of wood underneath for the contrasting woods to accentuate the design. The legs are made from curly maple and the bottom shelf is a solid 7/8" panel of birdseye maple. The remaining woods are walnut. The rose-colored marble is consistent with other Allen & Brother pieces. The distinct "A"-handled key lends strongly to the Allen & Brother attribution and is original to the piece since the key is not removable. The "A"-shaped incising design in the four panels is also suggestive of Allen & Brother, but possibly only a coincidence. The stylized leaf profiles are consistent with Philadelphia-area designs. Sturdy construction with no visible damage. All original casters. ca. 1870s. Measurements: 19 1/4" square (marble); 29 1/4" height. $2,500. Shipping can be arranged. Delivery within 100 miles of Philadelphia included. Contact info@rarevictorian.
