Victorian Furniture Highlighted in Cowan’s June 6, 2009 Fine and Decorative Art Auction
Cowan’s is preparing for a solid auction of Fine and Decorative Art on June 6th, where they are emphasizing 19th-century furniture and other decorative arts.
Along with elaborate newel post electroliers, a Tiffany lamp, Meeks side chairs, and Rococo and Renaissance Revival pieces, the sale features a ca 1870-1880 Midwestern Aesthetic Movement bedroom suite consisting of bed, armoire, dresser and washstand. Apparently a specially commissioned suite, the corpus of the furniture is factory-made, evidenced by the dowel joints on the drawers, but the exsquisite nature-inspired embellishments are hand-carved.
Though the attribution isn’t known, Cowan’s specialists are certain that the suite is Midwestern, and possibly Berkey and Gay, a Grand Rapids, Michigan firm.
Also featured is a Neo-Grec parlor suite, ca 1875-1880, with marquetry inlay. The suite consists of five pieces, including a sofa, an armchair, and three side chairs.
A full catalogue is available online at Cowan’s website.
