The June 12 event to be presented by Michaan’s Auctions of Alameda, CA, is sure to be a crowd pleaser. More than 260 lots of fine art, furniture and decorative art will cross the auction block this day.
One of the notable Victorian furniture items is a wonderful mid 19th century American Rocco Revival rosewood étagère cabinet attributed to J. & J. Meeks, New York (est. $35,000 – 40,000). The rectangular glazed and paneled case of this cabinet is surmounted by an arched pediment centering a carved acanthus leaf over a cartouche-shaped mirror plate, along with a conforming-shaped shelf, over an oval mirror plate enclosed by corner quadrant panels. The piece includes two graduated spandrel shelves raised on tapered pilaster form stiles on a shaped platform cabinet. The cabinet has a drawer over twin hexagonal shaped mirror plates with these being flanked by twin sets of two graduated spandrel shelves raised on pilaster feet headed by an apron frieze. This commanding cabinet stands an impressive 83in tall.
Two ebonized and upholstered side chairs (est. $2500 to 3500) attributed to Herter Brothers are also sure to garner their share of attention. The first chair has a scroll carved lozenge-shaped crestrail consisting of a center Egyptian female mask panel. This panel is then adorned by two sunflower panels over a rectilinear form splat with a cat and twin floral panels. The other side chair is dressed in tufted upholstered and has a hexagonal lozenge-shaped crestrail over a conforming carved splat with a central cat motif. Both chairs have shaped seats over carved roundel rails raised on tapering legs and India comb rubber casters.
An attributed Thomas Brooks marble top center table (est. $5000 to 7000) having a beaded frieze with a carved foliate apron also boasts floral shaped trestle supports ending in scrolled feet on casters. The inlaid parlor cabinet (est. $6000 to $8000) also from this era has its share of admirers. Decorated with gilt painting, trailing floral vines, and carved acanthus leaves cornices, the cabinet is further enhanced by an inlaid Renaissance grotesque mask of a man.

The artwork offered will impress. Who could resist the George Inness (American 1825-1894), framed oil on canvas, “Pastoral Scene with Church” estimated at $30,000 to 50,000? This image graces the auction catalog’s cover. “Minister Sewell’s Bathing Place, Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Sept (18)98,” by David Howard Hitchcock (Hawaii/California, 1841-1943), a framed oil on board (9 x 12¾in) is estimated to bring between $10,000 and $15,000.
Sterling will also take center stage with a 1930s Jensen style seven piece tea and coffee service (est. $7000 to 9000) enhanced with ivory mounts being presented for bids along with a nice assortment of other coffee pots and tea sets. The lone water pitcher to sell this day is a winner. With its appealing pear form with a flaring helmet shaped rim, this International La Paglia sterling pitcher (est. $3000 to 4000) has a lovely openwork ring foot of alternating spherical and twin chased flowerheads.
Tiffany Studios lighting and Art Glass examples make up a dozen lots offered by Michaan Auctions at this June event. Of special interest is the Tiffany Studios bronze floor lamp which is comprised of a cylindrical standard cast with a repeating lotus flower atop which sits an inverted bell-form shade with a band of reciprocal masks. This lamp is valued at $4000 to 5000.
Other collections to sell include a grouping of Continental porcelain, Russian and Continental silver and Objects du Vertu, a variety of 20th century American decorative arts, French furniture and decorative arts as well as other items.
