I was pressed for time this week, otherwise I would have given you more advanced warning of this sale which is happening today and tomorrow in New Orleans. The above-pictured Belter-attributed table will be part of the sale as well as several other notable Victorian-era pieces.

This Gothic chair is expected to fetch $25,000 to $40,000 (bidding starts at $20,000). The book, “The Gothic Revival Style in America, 1830-1870″ dates this chair to 1851-1856 and goes on to say that Frederick Stanton put four chairs in the Gothic design in his home.  This statement is ambiguous as to whether it was indeed chairs like this.  I assume that by captioning the photo with mention of Stanton that they are indeed associating the design with those in Stanton’s home.  You may have heard of the home before, “Stanton Hall“.

The book image shows a damaged skirt with missing arches below the seat, which this chair retains.  The pierced stiles on this chair are a unique attribute.

For Victorian furniture lovers, the better day of the sale will be tomorrow, where pieces by Meeks, Belter, Tisch, Pottier & Stymus, E.W. Hutchings, and more.  Full catalog for day 2 is here.

Lot #977 was a fairly modest bed branded “Herter Bros” (not just attributed) – it only brought $2,200 – seems pretty cheap for a piece of bona fide Herter Bros. http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/6138613
