Neo-Grec Herter Brothers or Pottier & Stymus Chairs

September 18, 2008

I don’t run across fine Neo-Grec, ebonized, Rosewood chairs like these too often.  Each chair has a bronze plaque in the back splat, one of a male figure and the other of a female.  There is ample ormolu throughout the chair and if I were the current owner, I would try to examine the back [...]

Just Call Me Stubby

September 15, 2008

I love how the seller of this cut-down Rococo parlor table puts it in the listing:
This WAS once a magnificent Victorian rosewood center table with turtle marble top. Somewhere down the line a long time ago, some rocket scientist decided to make a coffee table out of it and cut the legs off of it. [...]

Rosewood Rococo Revival Sofa With Carved Bird’s Nest

September 14, 2008

I have a friend who can’t pass up taking in needy animals (strays) which I can sympathize with and admire.  I think she has about 11 cats by now?  My mother has a more modest group of 3 stray cats in residence.

No, nothing [...]

Grand View will have a little of everything Victorian in this upcoming sale on Saturday.  The bed above will be up for sale and they are attributing it to Alexander Roux.  I would be happy to pay within the expected range of $4,000 to $6,000 for a bed of this quality were it to actually [...]

Pottier & Stymus Neo-Grec Half-Tester Bedstead

September 10, 2008

Grand View has the Pottier & Stymus-attributed bedstead shown to the right in their upcoming September 13th sale.
You don’t get more straightforward Neo-Grec than this – a repeating Greek Key pattern surrounding the classical-themed bronze plaque.  Like a Greek wreath split in half, either laurel or olive leaves create tassels on either side of the [...]

Alexander Roux or George Henkels Rosewood Chair?

September 8, 2008

If you’re in the Dallas area, the Dallas Auction Gallery is putting this laminated Rosewood chair up for bid and is attributing it to Alexander Roux.
I haven’t had anyone correct me on this yet as I count on you all to do when I misspeak, but to my recollection, Roux did not produce laminated furniture.
The [...]
