Here’s a nice inlaid and gold-incised Canterbury (music stand) coming up for sale via Ebay Live Auctions. This form is a more tapered shape whereas I personally own one that is more of a squared-off shape. Since most of us don’t keep sheet music lying around the parlor for those impromptu singalongs that crop up when company stops by, I make good use of mine as a magazine holder nearby the favorite reading chairs. Since we have more magazine subscriptions than the local library, we need something that can hold 30 or more of our recent magazines and fanning them out on a nearby table just isn’t going to work in that quantity. These pieces are perfect magazine stands for the antique-inclined.
As an aside, this piece is being categorized as Eastlake, but judging from the decorative elements, my feeling is that Renaissance Revival is more the appropriate style to assign. Although this piece is not a Hunzinger, it sure would look appropriate nearby some of his pieces.
Bidding ends April 13th, yet it already has two absentee bids. Bidding starts at $100 and expected range is $200-$400, and I expect it to end in the high range of that or beyond. Details and images here.
